John Lewis

A reproduction of one of Mark Rothko's distinctive multiform paintings in shades of blue and orange. Now you can have fabulous artwork in a size to fit your space! The high-quality image resolution on paper creates exceptional clarity, depth and richness of colour that really enlivens your walls. Handmade from ash wood, the frames and rims come in a choice of light natural colour, or a chocolate brown stain. Simply select the desired frame option, then choose from the sizes available. Each is finished with a wax coating that protects and shows off the natural grain. In line with our timber policy, the wood frame is from sustainable managed sources. Born in Russia in 1903, Rothko and his family emigrated to the US in 1913, fleeing violence against the Jews. Early figurative works reflect a preoccupation with political themes, as well as an interest in European Modernism developed as a student of Max Weber in New York. Paintings dating from Rothko's time with Adolph Gottlieb and “The Ten”, in the mid 1930s show increased simplification of form. This ultimately led to Rothko's turn to complete abstraction after the Second World War, which he practiced until his tragic suicide in 1970. Today, Rothko is regarded as one of the most significant American Abstract Expressionist painters of the 20th century and a chief inspirer of colour field painting. His abstract paintings translate beautifully into art prints for the home.
